Danes reign in Spain
Where Shu-Bi-Dua, Avenida Joan Miro 322, Cala Mayor, Palma
What “Perhaps the best stroganoff on the island . . .” Who´s to argue? Louis has gained a reputation over many years for serving what many people will claim is the best stroganoff on Mallorca. Try mentioning the Shu-Bi-Dua to any long-time resident in the Palma area and often they will reply with just one word – stroganoff. Once when we were there, a bar owner told us that he had lived on the island for many years and ate at the Shu-Bi-Dua several times a year, always choosing the same dish – I´m sure you can guess which one! The restaurant also serves Spanish and Danish cuisine as well as fine steaks.
Food Obviously pride of place has to go to the aforementioned house speciality – and it is very, very good. The stroganoff has tender pieces of meat and mushrooms in a rich, creamy sauce served with rice. Many people keep coming back for more and it is easy to see why. It´s tasty, plentiful and a very good price. The menu is extensive with a choice of 15 open sandwiches including Danish herring, Danish meatballs with red cabbage, Roquefort cheese, hamburger steak, or Danish salami. For a light or healthy option, there are two salads on offer – mixed or with Roquefort. Maybe the traditional prawn cocktail will suffice as a starter? The Shu-Bi-Dua has a fine selection of hot dishes including some of those available as an open sandwich. You could also plump for dishes such as Danish meatballs with red cabbage, potatoes and sauce; Wiener schnitzel; roast pork and red cabbage; or pork belly and parsley sauce. You will always see stroganoff on the menu but other house specialities include a choice of steaks served with crisp, golden chips; roast lamb; or sole if you fancy fish. The food lends itself very well to a glass of draught or bottled beer, or from the wine list of well-known Spanish names, including Ribeiro del Duero and Rioja, plus a house wine (again, at a very good price). In fact, I think you would be hard pressed to find better prices on Mallorca for the quality and the service.
Ambience and décor The Shu-Bi-Dua is on the main road between Palma and Cala Mayor but the building is back from the road so there is no traffic noise or there is another entrance, opposite the original Shu-Bi-Dua, which Louis still owns and has plans for. There is a nice, cosy room and bar with tables adorned with bright blue tablecloths and original tiled floors. It also has an extensive covered conservatory. Louis has been running the restaurant for more than 20 years and knows many of his customers who enjoy the relaxed, friendly air. It´s an ideal choice for a meal out with family or friends.
