SES OLIVERES IS CAPTURING THE ESSENCE OF MEDITERRANEAN FLAVOURS WHILE CELEBRATING THE FINEST MALLORQUIN INGREDIENTS IN SOLLER PORT
The immaculate horseshoe-shaped bay at Soller provides a calm haven, even in the heart of summer. Along the seafront, cars are few and far between while the old wooden tram linking Soller town with its port provides a nostalgic touch. Midway along the port is the restaurant Ses Oliveres, a popular dining spot for residents and holidaymakers who welcome the personal touch with fine cuisine served under the natural shade of olive trees.
The family-run restaurant specialises in fish dishes, including the famous Soller prawns, which are claimed to be the best in Spain. Diners have the choice of a table at the wooden external terrace where they can watch the little trams gently sway up and down the bay and listen to the soothing lapping of the waves against the shore. This leads to a larger, shady terrace with plenty of sunshades, two ancient olive trees which are more than 100 years old and climbing foliage to provide colour and more shade.
Whether your preference is for fish, meat, vegetarian, pasta or rice, you will find something to tempt you on the Ses Oliveres menu. As well as the delectable Soller prawns, clams, sardines, mussels, turbot, cod, monkfish, sea bass and squid can be found on the menu, according to what is available.
Local Mallorcan fish is a popular choice, especially with Soller residents. As it is a short season, if they know the restaurant has a particular fish in, it goes very quickly.
The popular paella dish is also served with a choice of fish, meat or vegetables, while pasta lovers are also well catered for, including a home-made vegetable lasagne. Other veggie choices include a vegetable mixed grill and the typically Mallorcan tumbet.
House specialities include roast shoulder of lamb, leg of pork with dried fruit, roast Magret duck with orange sauce (the oranges are from Soller) and fillet of beef with foie and Oporto.
Bruno served us lamb with rosemary, which was beautifully pink cutlets, and Dorado, which is a lovely white fish.
Be sure to save room for a sweet, as they are all home-made and offer a rich variety from hot chocolate fondant cake with vanilla sauce to home-made chocolate mousse. They also serve a Mallorcan dessert called Cardenal, which is made in Lloseta, and consists of a fine meringue with cream. The house special is orange cake made with Soller oranges served with orange and chocolate sauce. Celebrating local produce and using what surrounds you to create something new adds a fresh and original touch to a menu.
In all, 57 wines are on offer with a Mallorcan choice included in white, rose or red. Many Spanish varieties are available as well as choices from South Africa, Chile and Italy for example. For a lighter, summery touch, several cavas and sangria are also available.
One nice touch on the wine list is that each variety shows the grapes used and the alcohol volume, so even if that particular bottle or vineyard is not familiar, the grapes used will give an indication of the flavour. The restaurant also has a recommended wine of the week and its own house wine. The Ses Oliveres wine is a young Rioja, full of flavour and very more-ish. A separate sweet wine list is available with the dessert menu and includes Angel D’Or, the Soller orange liqueur.
Ses Oliveres is in a prime position on the Port of Soller, next to the tram stop, with views across the bay to the green hills beyond. The dishes complement its Soller setting, making the most of the lush local oranges, local Angel D`Or liqueur, fish unique to Mallorca when it is in season, plus the famous prawns.
It is a popular spot for lunch, as it provides a cool, shady haven from the searing sun. In the evening, candles adorn the tables to create a relaxed ambience. The interior includes interesting and colourful paintings by local artist Ernest, who has a musical background which is reflected in the themes of his works.
White linen adorns the tables with vivid Mediterranean yellow plates with matching yellow serviettes for the terraces and white linen for the interior restaurant.
