What Attractive family-run restaurant in the centre of the popular tourist resort of Cala D’Or on the eastern side of Mallorca. It has been run by the talented Deymier family for about 35 years and was one of the first restaurants to open in Cala D’Or. Now the son, Maxime, is at the helm, running the kitchen and devising the imaginative menu. His father Gerard, originally from France, is well-known on the island for the exquisite and exclusive cuisine he serves at his Restaurante Port Petit with its fine views over the Cala D’Or marina. La Sivina caters for a broader market while offering the same love of food. Maxime assures us that all the dishes are home-made offering a range of Mallorcan, Spanish and Mediterranean dishes, including various vegetarian options. The extensive menu includes a good choice of pizzas, pastas, barbecued specialities, salads, fish and meat courses. There is also a special children´s menu. The restaurant is in the main pedestrianised street in the resort, at a crossroads, with two external terraces and a shady, spacious interior.
Ambience and décor A friendly family restaurant where customers can be assured of a warm welcome. Because it is on the corner of the street, it is spacious and maintains a cosy feel. Diners can choose between the outside shady terraces, where they can watch the world go by or the interior restaurant to admire the paintings adorning the walls. The décor reflects the Mediterranean feel to the food, with warm colours, terracotta flooring and plants providing additional colour.
Food Many of the vegetables and salads have been grown in the family finca, so you can be assured of their freshness – as well as being genuine Mallorcan produce (a plus for those who enjoy fresh, local food as well as worry about their carbon footprint!). Allow plenty of time to look through the menu because there is a very good choice. Starters include home-made onion soup, Oriental-style chicken wings, Mussels Provencal baked with herbs and garlic butter or plump prawns with garlic and chilli. Again, the salads are extensive including a traditional Caesar salad, a tasty sounding spinach salad with eggs, blue cheese, bacon and onions or a mixed salad with smoked salmon, lime and dill sauce. Fish, according to what´s available in the market, could include a baked John Dory fillet, seabass or sole fillets with seafood and white wine sauce plus pilau rice. Meat courses range from roasted duck in orange sauce, Oriental-style spare ribs, home-made lamb pie, beef fillet stroganoff with pilau rice or barbecued steaks, hamburgers, or roasted Mallorcan lamb. There are about 12 pizzas to pick, all of which are made with fresh tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese, and about eight pasta dishes plus risottos and paella. Save room for a refreshing dessert such as home-made crème brulee, warm apple pie or tiramisu. The wine list includes Mallorcan favourites from JL Ferrer and Macia Batle, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese reds, whites and roses. We started with Spanish bruschetta with juicy red tomatoes, tasty Iberico ham and Mahones cheese. The broccoli risotto with mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and pesto sauce was also declared to be top class. This was followed by juicy, tender chicken breast stuffed with spinach and served on a bed of mashed potatoes – again a lovely summery dish with the vivid green spinach providing a colourful (and tasty) addition to the plump chicken. Maxime also brought us a pizza specially created for the September menu. The thin pizza crust was topped with a tasty tomato sauce with tender Spanish ham shaped to form a King´s crown and a bed of salad in the centre. The combination of pizza and salad with good jamon was certainly a winner for us. With the French family background, La Sivina uses the best French techniques in the kitchen while using a lot of Spanish products including Serrano hams and cheese from Mahon, Menorca.
Service Diners are greeted with a smile as they enter La Sivina. You can be assured of a friendly welcome and efficient service along with the fine food, which is very reasonably priced considering that everything is home-made and fresh.
